How much you can realistically earn online: expectations by way and time

On this page · 9
The honest answer to the question “how much can you earn online” is “from zero”. Not because people do not earn online, but because most ways bring nothing in the first months, and later income differs between people by hundreds of times. An average tells you nothing here, so you will not find average earnings in this article.
Instead, here is what can be said precisely: how long each way takes to bring the first money, what the amount depends on, what limits it and what it is worth comparing with, so that you know whether you would be better off simply working during that time.
In short
- The first money comes fastest from where you sell your time or your things. It comes slowest from what can, over time, earn without you.
- A reference point: the minimum hourly wage in 2026 is 7.05 €, and the average wage in the national economy in the second quarter of 2026 was 1 594.90 € net.
- Most people quit not because the way does not work, but because they expected a result within a few weeks.
What to compare with
To understand whether earning online is “worth it”, you need a reference point. The official figures are as follows:
| Indicator | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum monthly wage (MMA), 2026 | 1 153 € gross | Government resolution |
| Minimum hourly wage, 2026 | 7.05 € gross | Government resolution |
| Average monthly wage in the national economy, Q2 2026 | 2 628.20 € gross, 1 594.90 € net | State Data Agency |
A simple test: divide what you earned in a month by the hours you spent on it. If the result is less than the minimum hourly wage and the amount is not growing, the way is, for now, a hobby, not earnings. That is not bad – but it is worth knowing.
Expectations by way of earning
| Way | Time to first money | What the amount depends on | What limits it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selling your own things | Days | On what you have | The things run out – it is one-off income |
| Services (texts, translations, design, lessons) | Days to weeks, once the first client appears | The rate and the number of hours | Your time; finding clients |
| Surveys, microtasks | Weeks (until the payout threshold) | The number of tasks | Cents per task; the ceiling is very low |
| Affiliate marketing | Weeks to months | The audience, the product price and the commission rate | You need people who trust you; the commission is held until it is approved |
| Selling online, dropshipping | Weeks to months | The margin and the cost of advertising | A starting budget is needed; returns |
| Content (a blog, YouTube) | Half a year or more | Views and the topic | Platform thresholds; hundreds of hours of work are needed up front |
| Digital products | Months | The audience and the usefulness of the product | Easier to create than to find buyers |
The table deliberately contains no amounts. On the same platforms some people get nothing and others live off it, and the difference is determined not by the way but by three things from the third column: how many hours you put in, how many people you reach and how much is left from one sale.
Three limits nobody jumps over
Time
Where you sell hours, the income ends together with the hours. After work you can give two or three hours a day – and that is your ceiling until you raise your rate.
Audience
Where money is earned from people's attention, everything is determined by their number. The platforms show this openly. The YouTube Partner Program requires 1 000 subscribers and 4 000 watch hours in 12 months, and the first tier on Twitch requires 25 followers and an average of 3 viewers. These are only the thresholds from which you are allowed to start earning.
Margin
Where you sell goods or recommend other people's, you keep only a part of the price. From a 20 € product with a 10 % commission, about 1.65 € is left – the commission is calculated on the price excluding VAT. To build a meaningful amount out of that, you need either many sales or more expensive products.
Why most people quit
- They expected income within a few weeks. Almost all the ways that can later earn without you require months of unpaid work at the start.
- They chose by the promise, not by themselves. A way that requires filming yourself every day does not suit someone who does not like the camera.
- They tried everything at once. Five ways at an hour a week each give nothing; one at five hours gives the first result.
- They did not count. Without a record of time and income it is impossible to say whether you are moving forward.
- They bought a course instead of starting. Most of the basics can be learned for free from the platforms' own help pages.
How to check whether a way suits you
A 30-day trial
- Choose one way and write down how many hours a week you will give it.
- Set a goal for actions, not for income: 10 offers to clients, 8 posts, 20 listed items.
- Track your time and every euro received.
- After 30 days, answer three questions: did I do what I planned? Was there at least one sign that someone needs this (an enquiry, a sale, a follower)? Do I want to do this for another three months?
If you answer “no” to two of the three questions, change the way, not yourself. If “yes” – continue, and only then think about investing in equipment or advertising.
When a promise is a lie
The Bank of Lithuania (LB) reminds us: a guaranteed high return without risk is the main sign of fraud. The same rule can be applied to any earning offer: if a specific amount per day is promised, if neither skills nor time are needed, if you are first asked to pay – it is not a way to earn but a way to earn from you.
Taxes – from the first euro
When earnings become regular, it is an economic activity that has to be made official, even if the amounts are small. Most often people choose self-employment (individuali veikla) under a certificate or a business certificate (verslo liudijimas); the differences are explained in the ACS.lt article “Self-employment: a certificate or a business certificate”. When calculating how much you earn per hour, subtract taxes as well.
Frequently asked questions
How much can you realistically earn online per month?
From zero to a full salary – it depends on the hours, the audience and the margin. In the first months most ways bring almost nothing.
Which way brings the first money fastest?
Selling your own things and services you already know how to provide. They are limited by your things and your time, but they pay straight away.
How long does it take for online earnings to replace a job?
There is no guarantee that they will. Ways that rely on an audience usually need not months but years of consistent work.
How do I know it is worth continuing?
If after a month you see at least one sign that someone needs your work, and your earnings per hour are growing – continue. If not – change the way.
