Additional work is one of the most common ways to increase your income without giving up your main job. “Additional work” and “additional work offers” are searched for thousands of times a month in Lithuania, and “additional work at home in the evenings” – hundreds. People want to work when they have time, and preferably from home.

In this part of the guide: which additional jobs are realistically available in the evenings and at weekends, where to look for them, how many hours the law allows you to work and how not to turn additional work into a second full-time job.

In short

  • Additional work can be a second employment contract with another employer, an agreement on additional work with the same employer, or self-employed activity.
  • Including additional work, you may not work more than 12 hours a day and 60 hours in seven days.
  • Jobs with a flexible schedule suit evenings and weekends best: customer service in shifts, administration, lessons, texts.

Three forms of additional work

FormWhat it looks likeWho it suits
A second employment contractPart-time work for another employerThose who want a stable additional salary and social guarantees
An agreement on additional workAdditional functions or hours with the same employerWhen the employer has additional tasks
Independent workServices, orders, selling or an affiliate partnershipThose who want to control their time and price themselves

Additional work at home in the evenings

Evenings are best suited to jobs that do not have to be done at a strictly set time or that are worked in evening shifts:

  • Customer service – many companies look for people for evening or weekend shifts, often remotely.
  • Administration and data handling – tasks that can be done at any time of day before the deadline.
  • Lessons and consultations – pupils and clients are often free precisely in the evenings.
  • Texts, translation, design – orders with a deadline rather than working hours.
  • Social media management for small businesses.

Additional work at weekends and in your free time

Besides remote jobs, weekends also suit on-site work: event staffing, retail, seasonal work, courier work. They are often paid faster but require you to be physically present. In your free time – when your schedule is unpredictable – independent ways, where you decide yourself when to work, work best.

How many hours the law allows you to work

The State Labour Inspectorate (VDI) reminds of the working time limits:

  • the standard working time is 40 hours a week;
  • average working time including overtime, but without additional work, may not exceed 48 hours in seven days;
  • including overtime and additional work, you may not work more than 12 hours a day (not counting the lunch break) and 60 hours in seven days;
  • rest between working days is no shorter than 11 consecutive hours, and in seven days there must be at least 35 hours of uninterrupted rest.

These limits protect your health. If your main job is full-time, what realistically remains for additional work is a few hours a day or the weekends.

Do you need to tell your main employer

In most cases you are free to work elsewhere, but check your employment contract: it may contain non-compete or confidentiality clauses that restrict work at a competing company or for clients in the same field. If in doubt, it is better to discuss it in advance.

Where to find additional work offers

  • On job boards – filter by “part-time”, “shift work” or “remote work”.
  • Among acquaintances – small businesses often look for help without publishing ads.
  • In your own field – former clients and colleagues may have projects of a few hours a week.

Beware of ads saying “additional work at home without experience, pay straight away” that ask you to pay something to get started – they are covered in the part of the guide on packing and folding work at home.

When the additional work is independent

If you do not want a second employer, you can earn additional income independently: provide services, sell or recommend products for a commission. These ways are described in more detail in the track.lt guide on earning money online, in the part on additional earnings.
