Passive income is one of the most frequently mentioned concepts when talking about earning online. It sounds like a promise: you do the work once and the money pours in by itself. The truth is somewhat more modest but no less interesting: passive income exists, only it needs a lot of work at the start and some maintenance later.

This part of the guide covers what passive income is, how it differs from active income, which ways of earning passive income online really work and how long it takes until they start bringing in money.

In short

  • Passive income is income that does not depend on the hours worked every day.
  • Completely passive income almost never exists: at the start you invest either a lot of time or money.
  • Online, the most realistic ways are affiliate marketing, digital products and content that is found in search.

What passive income is

Passive income is income you receive without necessarily working at the moment it comes in. Active income – a salary, payment for a service or a lesson – stops when you stop working. Passive income comes from what has already been created: an article that attracts visitors, an e-book that people buy, rented property or investments.

In other words, passive income is not income without work but income from work done earlier. So the question “passive income – what is it?” has a simple answer: it is an asset that earns, whether it is a digital product or a deposit in a bank.

Passive income online: realistic ways

Affiliate marketing

You write a post or a review or make a video with an affiliate link – and as long as it is found in search or shared, sales come from it. It is one of the simplest ways to start, because you need neither a product of your own nor starting capital. More passivity comes from content that stays relevant for a long time: guides, comparisons, answers to frequent questions.

Digital products

E-books, templates, planners, video courses, photo packs. You create once and sell many times. The hardest part is not creating but finding buyers, so digital products work best for those who already have an audience or expert knowledge.

Content: a blog, YouTube, a newsletter

Content earns from advertising, affiliate marketing and sponsors. It is the slowest way – the first real money often comes after half a year or later – but content once created can earn for years. More on this in the part of the guide on earning on social media.

Investments and renting

The classic sources of passive income are deposits, bonds, shares, funds and renting out property. They need capital, and they carry risk. The Bank of Lithuania (LB) reminds us: if a guaranteed high return without risk is offered, it is the main sign of fraud.

What “passive income” looks like in police reports

The promise that “money will work for you” is the most common bait of investment scammers. Real cases from the police daily incident reports:

  • Kaunas, September 2026. A man (born 1959) filled in an online ad about investment services. A stranger called him, persuaded him to invest in an online platform and swindled him out of 47 730 €.
  • Alytus, September 2026. A woman (born 1984) lost 35 674 € after the same kind of ad and phone call.
  • Pakruojis district, September 2026. A woman (born 1968) lost 20 000 € in the same way.
  • Vilnius, September 2026. A woman (born 1958) transferred 15 650 € to a fake investment platform over three weeks.
  • Tauragė, October 2026. A man (born 2001) contacted a person through an app about a “deposit multiplying” service, transferred 360 € in one night and did not receive the agreed profit.

In all the cases everything started with a form filled in online and a call from a stranger. A licensed financial intermediary does not call you on their own initiative and does not ask you to transfer money to a private person's account or a crypto wallet.

If you have already transferred money – first call your bank, then report it to the police via epolicija.lt or by phone on 112.

How long it takes until income becomes passive

At the start all passive income is very active. For the first 3–6 months you work and there is almost no money: you write, film, create a product, learn what works. Only later, when content has accumulated and starts being found, does income begin to grow without additional work.

That is why it is best to combine: an active way (services, a job) pays the bills now, while you build the foundation of passive income a few hours a week.

The passive income curve: a lot of work and little income at the start, later the income grows
The passive income curve: at the start there is more work than income, later – the other way round.

The most common myths

  • “Passive income without work.” There is work, only it is done earlier.
  • “It is enough to buy a course.” A course is not an asset. An asset is what you create yourself.
  • “Cryptocurrencies and bots will earn for you.” Offers with a guaranteed daily return are the most common form of scam.

Taxes

Passive income is not tax-free. Affiliate commissions and sales of digital products are self-employment (individuali veikla), while interest, dividends or rental income are taxed under separate rules. Which form of activity suits you – in the ACS.lt article “Self-employment: a certificate or a business certificate”, and the tax can be worked out with the personal income tax (GPM) calculator.
