Facebook ad cost: how much it costs and whether it is worth buying ads for an affiliate link

On this page · 8
“How much does Facebook advertising cost?” is a question with no answer in euros, because there is no price list. The price of each impression is set by an auction, and you choose only the budget. For an affiliate another question matters more: will I pay less for the advertising than I receive in commissions?
This article covers how the Meta auction and budgets work according to Meta's official explanations, how to work out the ad cost per sale and why paid advertising usually does not pay off for low-commission products.
In short
- There is no fixed price for Facebook advertising: every impression is won in an auction, and you set the budget.
- The daily budget is not a hard limit – on a single day Meta can spend up to 75 % more, but over a week no more than 7 daily budgets.
- Advertising pays off only when the ad cost per sale is lower than the commission. Before starting, check whether the programme allows paid advertising at all.
How Meta sets the price
Meta explains that every time there is an opportunity to show an ad to a person, an auction takes place. The winner is not the highest bid but the highest total value, which is made up of three parts:
| Part | What it means | What you can influence |
|---|---|---|
| Bid | How much the advertiser is willing to pay for the desired result | The budget and the bid strategy |
| Estimated action rate | How likely it is that this person will take the action you are aiming for | The audience and the clarity of the offer |
| Ad quality | Assessed from people's reactions and from signs of low quality: withheld information, sensational language, engagement bait | The text and the image |
Two practical things follow from this. First, the same ad costs different amounts at different times, because the competitors in the auction change. Second, a “shouting” ad full of promises not only breaks the rules but also becomes more expensive, because it is assessed as low quality.
Budget: how much you will actually spend
According to Meta's explanation of daily budgets:
- the daily budget is an approximate amount per day, calculated within a week running from Sunday to Saturday;
- on a day when opportunities are better, Meta can spend up to 75 % more than the daily budget;
- no more than 7 daily budgets are spent over a week;
- if you start or change the budget in the middle of the week, the amount for the rest of the week is recalculated proportionally.
Meta also recommends allocating a budget for at least 7 days so that the system learns who to show the ad to. In the first days, the so-called learning phase, results are usually more expensive.
The minimum daily budget allowed depends on the currency and on what you are paying for – the ads manager itself shows it when you create a campaign. Whether VAT is added to the amount you will see in the ad account's payment settings and on the invoice; when calculating, use the final amount that is charged to your card.
The calculation: ad cost per sale
An affiliate needs three numbers: how much one click costs, what share of those who click go on to buy, and what the commission per sale is.
Formula
Ad cost per sale = cost per click ÷ conversion.
Profit per sale = commission − ad cost per sale.
Below is an example with made-up numbers, intended to show the arithmetic. Your cost per click and conversion will be different, and you will find them out only by testing.
| Case (example) | Cost per click | Conversion | Ad cost per sale | Commission | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cheap product, low commission | 0.20 € | 2 % | 10.00 € | 0.58 € | −9.42 € |
| Mid-priced product | 0.20 € | 2 % | 10.00 € | 3.93 € | −6.07 € |
| More expensive product, higher commission | 0.20 € | 2 % | 10.00 € | 21.32 € | +11.32 € |
| The same product, but conversion of 0.5 % | 0.20 € | 0.5 % | 40.00 € | 21.32 € | −18.68 € |
The table shows a pattern, not a forecast: as long as the commission is below a few euros, paid advertising has almost no chance. And even with a high commission everything is decided by conversion, which you do not know in advance.
When paid advertising is loss-making
- Low commission. If you receive less for a sale than a few dozen clicks cost, the numbers do not add up.
- Cold audience. People who do not know you buy less often than your followers. A recommendation works because of trust, and advertising does not create it.
- Purchase not made straight away. If a person clicks the ad and buys a week later on another device, the sale may not be attributed to you.
- Commission paid only once. For subscriptions where only the first payment earns a commission, later months will not recoup the advertising costs.
- Returns. When the buyer is refunded, the commission is cancelled, while the advertising costs remain.
What the programmes and Meta itself prohibit
| Rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Brand keywords and names in paid advertising | Many programmes prohibit advertising on the seller's name – that way the affiliate intercepts buyers who were already looking for the seller anyway. For example, the Amazon Associates rules restrict paid search advertising |
| Direct link from the ad | Some programmes require the ad to lead to your own page, not straight to the seller via the affiliate link |
| Labelling advertising | A paid ad with an affiliate link is still advertising – it must be clear to the person that you receive remuneration |
| Claims | Meta treats withheld information and sensational language as signs of low quality; health and earnings promises are prohibited in programme rules as well |
Before spending your first euro, read the rules of the specific programme: no commissions are paid for advertising that is not permitted, and the account may be suspended.
If you still want to try
- Sell without advertising first. If the product does not sell to your followers, advertising will not fix that.
- Choose a product with a higher commission and a clear offer.
- Set the amount you can afford to lose, and an overall spending limit for the campaign.
- Use a separate link tag (sub-ID) so that you can see how many sales the advertising itself brought.
- Do the sums every week: spend, clicks, sales, commissions. If after the learning phase the ad cost per sale exceeds the commission – stop.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Facebook advertising cost per day?
As much as you set in the budget. There is no fixed price, and the minimum daily budget allowed is shown by the ads manager when you create a campaign.
Does Instagram advertising cost a different amount?
It is bought through the same Meta system and the same auction. The price depends on the audience, the competition and the quality of the ad, not on whether it is Facebook or Instagram.
Why was more spent than my daily budget?
Meta can spend up to 75 % more on a single day if it sees better opportunities, but over a week it does not exceed 7 daily budgets.
Can you advertise an affiliate link?
It depends on the programme's rules. Some programmes restrict paid advertising or prohibit using the seller's name – check before you start.
From what commission is it worth trying advertising?
There is no exact number. Do the sum: cost per click ÷ conversion has to be less than the commission. With a commission of a few euros that rarely works out.
